History Walk and Talk: Life along the Patuxent

For the past 9,000 years, people from different backgrounds have called JPPM home in one form or another.
From the Native Americans to the English settlers, people have sculpted the land along the picturesque
Patuxent River to fit their needs. Come take a leisurely hour and a half walk along the beautiful river shore,
as we explore a recreated Native American village and move along to a 17th century tobacco plantation. This
is a free, drop-in program; registration is not required.

Basket Weaving: Pine Needle Baskets
February 8, 10:00am-4:00pm
Can you really weave a basket from pine needles? Yes, you can, and the process is easier than you think!
Join us to learn how to coil and stitch together pine needles to create your very own basket. This is a
great class for beginners. This workshop is perfect for participants aged 13 and up. Pre-registration

Of course you can put all your eggs in one basket - especially if it is one that is handmade by
you! Learn to customize your rib basket by adding colored weavers. Appropriate for ages 15 and older.

Ever wonder how Native Americans made stone tools? Ever wanted to learn how to do it? During this
workshop you will learn the techniques to turn stone into tools. The workshop will include how to
select material, the science behind knapping, and the chance to create your own stone arrowheads.

Painting with Primitive Pigments

For thousands of years humans have been using stone and charcoal to make paintings from Lascaux
to Rembrandt. Join us as we explore these pigments that have shaped art and humanity. This

Backyard Games

leisure of the past. Perfect for all ages, this hands-on event is both entertaining and

Kayaking Through Time
June 28, 10am-12pm
Join us for a leisurely paddle along the Patuxent and St. Leonard Creek. Take in the
scenic views of the cliffs and forests as you learn about the area's rich natural and
human history. This 2-hour paddling trip is on protected waters. Paddlers can use our
kayaks or bring their own. Appropriate for ages 13 and up. Registration is required.
