History Walk and Talk: Life along the Patuxent

January 4, 11:00am-12:00pm

For the past 9,000 years, people from different backgrounds have called JPPM home in one form or another. From the Native Americans to the English settlers, people have sculpted the land along the picturesque Patuxent River to fit their needs. Come take a leisurely hour and a half walk along the beautiful river shore, as we explore a recreated Native American village and move along to a 17th century tobacco plantation.  This is a free, drop-in program; registration is not required.

How are we able to interpret the history of the different people that have called JPPM home for the past 9,000 years? The Park is home to numerous sites ranging from Native American, Colonial, to tenant farmers and others. Join in an hour and a half strolling conversation on how we know what we know from the past and how we are able to tell their stories. This is a free, drop-in program; registration is not required.

Drinks of History: Chocolate

January 11, 1:00-2:30pm

Have you ever wondered how Marie Antoinette or Thomas Jefferson liked their hot chocolate? Learn about the fascinating history of everyone’s favorite winter beverage and even get to try a cup of cocoa prepared in the colonial fashion in this hands-on workshop. Pre-registration required. Fee $10/Friends $9.

Explore nature and history with us in this free Pre-K Storytime program. Each month we will investigate a new topic through a story, hands-on activities, and crafts. Ages 2-5 years old.  Pre-registration is recommended.

Drinks of History: A Night at the Colonial Coffee House

January 15, 6:30-8:30pm

Did colonists do open mic nights at their coffee shops? Was it where all the 18th century hipsters spent their days reading and writing? If these questions piqued your interest, then join us for a cup of joe (prepared in the colonial style) as we talk about colonial coffee houses and maybe try a couple of coffee house games. (Don't worry, there will be no open mics!) Pre-registration required. Fee $10/Friends $9.

Why tea? What makes it so special? For centuries people have been relaxing or waking up with a cup of tea. Today, tea has become one of the most popular drinks in the United States. Basket Weaving: Pine Needle Baskets

February 8, 10:00am-4:00pm

Can you really weave a basket from pine needles? Yes, you can, and the process is easier than you think! Join us to learn how to coil and stitch together pine needles to create your very own basket. This is a great class for beginners. This workshop is perfect for participants aged 13 and up. Pre-registration required. Fee $20/Friends $18.

March 22, 9:00am-1:00pm

Whether you have a fireplace, fire pit, or wood stove why not tend the flames with a fire poker that you forged yourself? Join us as we take simple bars of steel and turn them into something amazing. This workshop is perfect for participants aged 15 and older. Pre-registration required. Fee $40/Friends $36.
