For the past 9,000 years, people from different backgrounds have called JPPM home in one form or another. From the Native Americans to the English settlers, people have sculpted the land along the picturesque Patuxent River to fit their needs. Come take a leisurely hour and a half walk along the beautiful river shore, as we explore a recreated Native American village and move along to a 17th century tobacco plantation. This is a free, drop-in program; registration is not required.

How are we able to interpret the history of the different people that have called JPPM home for the past 9,000 years? The Park is home to numerous sites ranging from Native American, Colonial, to tenant farmers and others. Join in an hour and a half strolling conversation on how we know what we know from the past and how we are able to tell their stories.  This is a free, drop-in program; registration is not required.

Basket Weaving: Pine Needle Baskets

February 8, 10:00am-4:00pm

Can you really weave a basket from pine needles? Yes, you can, and the process is easier than you think! Join us to learn how to coil and stitch together pine needles to create your very own basket. This is a great class for beginners. This workshop is perfect for participants aged 13 and up. Pre-registration required. Fee $20/Friends $18.

Of course you can put all your eggs in one basket - especially if it is one that is handmade by you! Learn to customize your rib basket by adding colored weavers. Appropriate for ages 15 and older. Pre-registration required. Fee $40, Friends $36.

Flintknapping

April 16, 6:30-8:30pm

Ever wonder how Native Americans made stone tools? Ever wanted to learn how to do it? During this workshop you will learn the techniques to turn stone into tools. The workshop will include how to select material, the science behind knapping, and the chance to create your own stone arrowheads. This workshop is perfect for ages 13 and up. Join us at Jefferson Patterson Park as we take natural materials such as turkey feathers, pine pitch and sinew and turn them into beautiful and practical arrows. Appropriate for ages 12 and up. Immerse yourself in the beauty and history of Patterson House and Gardens with our Art in the Garden workshop, led by acclaimed artist Mary Ellen Carsley. Begin with a guided tour of the gardens, uncovering their historical significance, diverse flora, and sustainable practices. Following the tour, enjoy a hands-on art session where Mary Ellen will guide you in capturing the garden’s essence through watercolor. Painting with Primitive Pigments

For thousands of years humans have been using stone and charcoal to make paintings from Lascaux to Rembrandt. Join us as we explore these pigments that have shaped art and humanity. Backyard Games

Drop in during the afternoon to explore and play games from the Colonial era to today, discovering how they reflect the daily lives and leisure of the past. Perfect for all ages, this hands-on event is both entertaining and educational; just bring your curiosity! This is a free, drop-in program; no registration required.

Kayaking Through Time

June 28, 10am-12pm

Join us for a leisurely paddle along the Patuxent and St. Leonard Creek. Take in the scenic views of the cliffs and forests as you learn about the area's rich natural and human history. This 2-hour paddling trip is on protected waters. Paddlers can use our kayaks or bring their own. Appropriate for ages 13 and up. Registration is required. Bring your own kayak: $25 per person, Friends of JPPM $20. JPPM Provided kayak: $30 per person, Friends of JPPM $25
